SPONSORSHIP
The Loop of KindnessTwo people each from different societies and thousands of miles apart are suddenly connected………it is an unlikely new friendship but it happens and with what result?
One might see such an introduction just in terms of helper and helped. But it is more than that because a relationship is set up, the outcome of which can reveal needs in many of us wherever we are, either here or in Africa.
How do we select our students?Linking a young person in Kenya with a sponsor in UK is an uncomplicated process.
At the Kenya end, young candidates having fee problems are brought to the notice of one of our Field Officers by the local community or school and are informally interviewed by a Trustee advised by the Field Officer.
To the question “why do you need help?” the answers are typically “I am an orphan without anyone to support me” or “My family has no income”. In as careful a judgement as is possible, each case is assessed and registered and given a priority rating.
UK SponsorsAnyone interested in SKET can be involved in either of two ways:
To be linked to and support, either fully or part, a student for one or more years at Secondary school.
A sponsor can choose a boy or girl and currently the full fee for secondary boarding is approximately £28/month as for 2018. This plan incorporates the usual features of sponsorship ie letters and photos from Kenya and possibly even meeting up one day in Kenya. SKET does not assume year on year renewal from a donor, but of course hope students can be helped to complete their secondary education either for the full 4 years or less in the case of suddenly needing help midway through their secondary education.
or
Simply to make a donation with a reduced personal involvement, such funds in principle being used no differently ie to free students from the burden of fee demands that cannot be met by their family.
In 2017 SKET enjoyed an additional income stream from an ongoing collaboration with charitylinks.org.uk. This is an umbrella organisation working to improve education in East Africa. Charitylinks manages cycle adventure holidays where participants are encouraged to gain sponsorship for participating in such challenges in addition to their holiday costs. Two such trips are planned for 2019 to Rwanda and Kenya respectively. SKET will enable participants to meet some of our sponsored students during the trip to Kenya and will ultimately benefit from sponsorship funds accrued and dispensed by Charitylinks.

What we do
We enable Kenyan teenagers from poor and broken families to complete their secondary education by paying their school fees without which schooling would be denied. Our funds to do this are raised in the UK from donations most often sourced from sponsors who are linked to a particular student.
SKET has three UK Trustees and two Kenyan Field Officers and is registered with the Charity Commission No. 1118914 and with an account at the CAF Bank.
